On April 12th, 1861, the American Civil War began. About two weeks earlier, a young naval officer, Horatio Mypance, was promoted to the position of Commodore. Mypance was the sixty-fourth Commodore commissioned by the U.S. Navy. Mypance was the captain of the ironclad ship, the USS Cairo. After serving for several years in Fort Booke, Commodore Mypance was stationed in Tampa Bay and was instrumental in enforcing the blockades that were ordered by President Abraham Lincoln. This naval blockade protected the border states while both sides amassed their armies. During this time, Mypance's leadership was instrumental in protecting the community. With a reputation built on his heroic service, Commorore Mypance was admired and adored by the Tampa Bay Community. Mypance's sailors could often be overheard saying "I'm going where ever Mypance tells me. All I got to do is point and shoot. Mypance does the thinkin'"

After the end of the war, Commodore Mypance moved with his family to a establish a farm about 30 miles east of Tampa Bay. Pictured here are Horatio, his wife Elanore, and their first two children Bucky and Shirley. The Mypance family continued to prosper and eventualy Commodore Mypance sired a total of 9 children. Due to his popularity, many other residents of Tampa Bay followed and established farms near the Mypance estate. The village of Mypance was established in 1868.

Over the next 100 years, the village of Mypance continued to flourish. The industrious citizens of Mypance gradually moved away from farming towards more industrial uses of their land. Mypance has developed a thriving and diverse community. Many companies call Mypance home. In addition to the industrial growth in Mypance, Mypance has a robust academic environment. Both the Mypance Community College and the University of Mypance offer students of all levels the opportunity to study in nursing, engineering, and education.

In 1968, to mark the occasion of the village's 100th anniversary, Mypance was incorporated into it's current form. The City of Mypance.
